DARE DEEP & XDC organised project clustering event with great success

On Wednesday 10 July 2019 the DARE project, along with projects DEEP and XDC, hosted a very successful project clustering event at the campus of NCSR Demokritos in Athens, Greece in the frame of the 7th Hellenic Forum 2019.

The full day clustering event (the Agenda is available here) entitled Creating platform-driven e-Infrastructure innovation on EOSC brought together for the first time all H2020 EINFRA-21 projects the workshop where other related EC-funded projects and initiatives were represented. Of central importance was also the representation of EOSC hub partners, EC officials and other stakeholders.

With the action EINFRA-21, platform-driven innovation is encouraged in order to address hard technical questions of high scientific and societal value, as part of a wider e-infrastructures strategy. The goal of this workshop was to allow participants to inform the wider community on progress, objectives and their vision, increasing the potential for cross-pollination, reducing overlap and spawn new synergies. In addition, as the progress and sustainability of platform-innovation projects crucially depends on EOSC this event helped towards ensuring that innovative platform-driven work is exploited in line with EC strategy.

The morning after, on July, 11, for the first time EINFRA-21 projects, engaged in important technical discussions which led to know-how exchange and further synergies to be developed.

Georgios Nounesis, Director & Chairman of the Board of NCSR Demokritos and Vangelis Karkaletsis, Director of the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications of NCSR Demokritos, Scientific Advisor and coordinator of the DARE project, initiated the workshop presenting National Research Infrastructures that are active at NCSR Demokritos, as well as the organisationx’s actions towards building e-Infrastructure driven innovation.

Agnes Spilioti of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT), took the floor to present the National R&D Landscape in addition to the strategy towards a National Funding Plan for Research Infrastructures. The EOSC current Status and Perspectives were then laid down by Georgia Tzenou, representative of the European Commission.

Additionally, in the frame of a session dedicated to the projects involved, Malcolm Atkinson, from the University of Edinburgh, presented DARE and the challenge of delivering agile excellence on European e-Infrastructures. Mario David, from the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP), talked about DEEP-Hybrid-DataCloud, the projects’ goals, its core components, collaborations and early results.

Furthermore, Daniele Cesini of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare and XDC Project coordinator, then talked about the eXtreme Data Cloud project (XDC) and how scalable data management services can impact the next generation of distributed e-Infrastructures.

The workshop continued with presentations from representatives of projects EUXDAT, PROCESS, FREYA, ExtremeEarth, FAIR for Fusion and concluded with a fruitful discussion concerning open science on EOSC and the EOSC hub itself.

On the next day, July 11, the first ever technical meeting, primarily aimed at EINFRA-21 projects, took place with the projects’ representatives discussing the opportunities for further synergies and collaborations.
